President Chirac denies denigrating remarks towards Minister Tuomioja
French President Jacques Chirac commented for the
first time on Monday on the allegations made by the French weekly L'Express
last week. According to Thursday's L'Express, Chirac had
questioned the abilities of Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki
Tuomioja, saying that he is incompetent and "a zero", especially
with respect to his handling of the crisis in Lebanon.

Complaints filed on police action during Smash Asem protest
Actions taken by police during clashes with demonstrators taking part in the Smash Asem protest in the centre of Helsinki on Saturday are to be assessed by other officials. At a press conference on Tuesday, Minister of the Interior Kari Rajamäki and National Police Commissioner Markku Salminen defended the actions of the police. Police surrounded hundreds of people, limited the free movement of even more, and detained 136.

EU criticises China for restricting freedom of expression as ASEM summit ends
The European Union sharply criticised China on Monday for its measures taken to restrict freedom of expression. Speaking on Monday, the last day of the summit of the Europe Asia Meeting (ASEM) in Helsinki, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso said that the restrictions on freedom of expression enacted by China on Sunday are a "very negative development".
