Dozens of floating homes could be placed on Kaisaniemenlahti bay
After completing its preliminary park and shoreline designs for the inlet made up of the Kaisaniemenlahti and Eläintarhanlahti bays, the City of Helsinki plans to build permanent houseboats and floating homes in the Kaisaniemenranta waterfront area. The idea is to create building sites on the water for 21 houseboats and six floating homes along the Kaisaniemenranta shoreline.
Also a floating pavilion restaurant is to be sited at the eastern end of Eläintarhanlahti bay.
The capital city intends to set precise demands for the possible locations as well as for the outward appearances of the floating homes.
The houseboats will have to be either former or present ships that have been converted for use as permanent homes.
The floating homes are residential properties that have been built on pontoons and that can be moored to the seabed for use as a dwelling. The purpose is to hook up the houseboats and floating homes to the city's water and sewage systems by a fixed connection.
A year ago, the City of Helsinki assessed the possible locations of houseboats along its shorelines, whereupon 12 suitable spots were found, and the downtown district of Kaisaniemi was regarded as the most promising one.
In addition to Kaisaniemi, floating homes have been considered also for the new Fishing Harbour residental area in the western part of Sompasaari Harbour.
Helsinki's City Planning Committee is to handle the designs for the Kaisaniemenlahti and Eläintarhanlahti bays at its meeting tomorrow - Thursday. If they are approved by the committee, the final shoreline and park plan will be completed in the course of next year.
