RIM hires former Nokia Vice President
 |
Former Nokia Vice President Urpo Karjalainen has been appointed as the head of the Asian operations of the Canadian firm Research in Motion (RIM).
Until last autumn Karjalainen was working for Nokia as a Senior Vice President.
RIM is best known for its Blackberry mobile phones.
In the period from 2004 to 2007, Karjalainen was Nokia’s Senior Vice President responsible for the Customer and Market Operations’ sales & marketing activities in the Asia-Pacific area.
From 2008 to 2009 Karjalainen had the global responsibility of sales to operator customers.
Karjalainen’s last position at Nokia was Senior Vice President of European operations.
Urpo Karjalainen resigned from Nokia last autumn, and RIM hired him in May.
Another Nokia executive who has decided to leave the Finnish mobile phone company is Pekka Rantala.
Currently, Rantala is holding the post of Senior Vice President, Global Marketing, and his employment at Nokia will come to an end during the current year. Rantala is not willing to comment on the reasons for his resignation.
Rantala has been working for Nokia since 1994.
According to the information gathered by Helsingin Sanomat, several Nokia executives and managers have become frustrated with the sense of drift and stagnation caused by the ongoing reorganisation of duties.
Some of the employees are also dissatisfied with Nokia’s February decision to choose Microsoft’s Windows as its primary smartphone platform.
On the other hand, it is typical that employees leave a company during major changes.
At present, Nokia is taking measures in order to persuade its key employees to stay at the company through the period of transition.
