A good deal warmer than Madrid
Sunny weekend in prospect before the temperature drops again
 |
The climate continues to make news, with the warm spring weather extending over an increasingly large area of the country. On Thursday, many places to the south-west of a line extending from Oulu to Savonlinna enjoyed temeperatures around 25°C, the official measure for a hot spell in Finland.
As on Wednesday, the warmest place in the country was Pori on the west coast, with 27.4°C, and several other cities along the coast enjoyed temperatures over 26°C. The warmth spread down into the south-east of the country, too, with Joutseno recording 26.5°C.
Whilst it was not so chilly that one would actually complain, the proximity of the sea reduced the figures in Helsinki, where the Kaisaniemi measuring station recorded 21°C. Only a relatively short distance away at Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, the mercury rose close to 25°C.
According to the weather forecasters, temperatures may drop a degree or two today, but fine, sunny weather is promised into the weekend, before next week brings a sharp jolt. Temperatures as high as these in early May are quite exceptional, and some idea of the topsy-turvy nature of the week’s weather can be had from the fact that Pori was 15 degrees warmer than Madrid on Thursday.
The all-time record for May in Finland is still a fair way off, however: on 30.5.1995 it reached 31.0°C in Lapinjärvi, in Uusimaa Province.
