The Supreme Court has pronounced its final ruling this morning in the case involving the custody of two Finnish-American brothers. The Court ruled that its earlier decision to return the 10- and 13-year-old boys to their father in the United States is upheld.
The boys' Finnish mother asked the Supreme Court to reopen the case on Monday last week. To back her request she presented new evidence, such as expert opinions and reports of events before and after the Court's previous ruling.
According to the Supreme Court, this case purely concentrated on deciding whether or not the decision to return the children to their father had legal basis.
The Minister of Justice Johannes Koskinen (Soc.Dem.) has publicly commented that the opinion of children must always be sought and listened to in custody disputes. Koskinen maintains that the views of the children should affect the decisions of courts.
Koskinen has also stressed that he does not want to criticise the Supreme Court in this particular case. He is merely concerned about children getting their will heard in general.
