Metso Paper, the world’s leading manufacturer of machinery for the paper industry, plans to cut 123 jobs at its Jyväskylä plant by next summer.
Legally mandated negotiations on the issue between the company's management and employees concluded on Monday.
The Rautpohja plant in Jyväskylä will see the greatest number of job losses of all of Metso’s Finnish installations. Discussions on personnel reductions are also scheduled for Karhula and Jyväskylä.

A total of 700 jobs are to be lost at Metso installations in Sweden and the United States. Metso Paper also plans to implement outsourcing plans that would affect about 600 people.
In Jyväskylä, the trade union organisations at the plant were disappointed with the result of the talks and announced a protest strike that would begin on Tuesday evening at 10:00PM and end on Sunday evening.
Earlier, the entire staff at the Rautpohja plant received a warning of possible temporary layoffs.

The cutbacks are the result of a worldwide decline in demand for paper manufacturing machinery. Metso has decided to reduce the company’s costs by EUR 50 million a year.
Metso also plans changes in the way it handles business. The company says that it has a long-term strategy to adapt the company’s fixed costs with the prevailing market situation.
