First roofing elements for Olympic Stadium lifted into place
Construction work on the roofing of the East Stand at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium is moving ahead. On Tuesday, crews lifted the first large element of the new roof into place. The completed roof, comprising 19 such elements, will weigh around 500 tons, and will be held up by seven steel columns.
The basic frame of the roof should be completed and in position by February of 2005, and the entire renovated stadium is scheduled for completion by the beginning of May, in order to be ready to host the IAAF World Championships in Athletics later in the summer.
