Helsinki University and the Helsinki University of Technology were both included in the ranking list of "the 200 top universities in the world" that was compiled by the British Times Higher Education Supplement.
Helsinki University was ranked 129th and the Helsinki University of Technology 176th. American universities took the top placings as also previously in the ranking lists published by a university in Shanghai.
In the latest Chinese university rankings, five Finnish Universities were placed on the list of the 500 best universities in the world: Helsinki University, Turku University, the Helsinki University of Technology, Jyväskylä University, and Oulu University. In their first ranking list even Kuopio University had been included. THES declared that its rankings represent a first attempt to compare the world’s top universities on a more comprehensive format. The Chinese and other studies have been criticised in some quarters for being overly concerned with research performance.
