The Swedish People's Party is willing to agree on cooperation among centre-right parties in the upcoming Presidential elections, provided that a common candidate will be appointed already for the first round of the elections.
According to the party, "The most important thing is that the candidate will have authority even beyond his or her own party".
The candidate does not necessarily have to be Swedish-speaking, says Secretary General Berth Sundström.
Party chairman and Minister of the Environment Jan-Erik Enestam expressed doubts about possible centre-right cooperation on the Presidential front in an interview on TV earlier this week. He argued that "voters cannot be manipulated".
Currently a survey is being conducted among the Swedish People's Party members in order to find out if the party should have a candidate of their own in the Presidential elections.
However, Enestam does not welcome the idea of a candidate of the party's own. Moreover, he has announced that he will not be available himself.
