Prof. Kari. S. Tikka, 61, a professor at the Department of Public Law of the University of Helsinki and a well-known Finnish tax expert, was found dead in his apartment in the Punavuori district of the capital at the weekend.
Police are quite certain that Tikka was killed, but have thus far withheld details of the incident.
Tikka was last seen alive leaving DTM, a Helsinki restaurant and night-club, shortly before 4 a.m. on the morning of Thursday last, as the establishment was closing. He had left the restaurant in the company of two men in their thirties, and it is believed the departure may have been caught on local CCTV cameras.
Police noted that nothing in their enquiries so far has suggested the crime has any connection with Tikka's work.
Prof. Tikka apparently lay dead in his apartment from sometime early on Thursday morning until his body was discovered between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Colleagues and acquaintances were alerted to his disappearance by his failure to attend a scheduled meeting at the university.
In later developments on Monday morning, police reported that they had located the two men seen leaving the restaurant with Tikka.
Investigations of their possible involvement in his killing are ongoing, but police have not released details.
Professor Tikka was often referred to as a "tax professor", and was recognised as the country's leading expert on tax law.
He was largely instrumental in the changes to corporate tax legislation drafted in Finland in the 1990s. He was also an advocate of the flat-tax system.
