ALL SAINTS: SUNDAY SHOPPING AND MAYBE SOME SNOW
|
 |
A quick heads-up to readers in Finland that Saturday will be a Sunday, in as far as shops will not be open. This is to mark All Saints' Day.
As is customary in such cases, stores will be allowed to open on the Sunday, but in this instance it also heralds the start of Sunday opening all the way up to Christmas.
The arrangement for this weekend is that all shops may be open from 7:00-21:00 today, Friday. Banks and Alko liquor stores will also be open as normal today.
All shops with the exception of those in the pedestrian precinct under Helsinki's central railway station will be closed on Saturday.
Shops and department stores are allowed to open from 12-21 on Sunday 4th November, though many may choose to stay open for shorter periods, for instance from 12-18.
Sunday shopping will thereafter be a regular feature right through to the end of December.
However, just to confuse matters, shops will NOT be open on Sunday November 11th, which is Father's Day.
Bus and train services on Saturday will adhere to Sunday schedules, but it is always worth checking from Finnish Railways or local bus operators.
As well as changes to their shopping plans, people in Southern and Central Finland might need to pull out an extra layer of clothing for the weekend. The Finnish Meteorological Institute is promising an end to the unusually mild weather and a dump of snow - possibly a good deal of it - from a depression passing across the country.
