The setting free of the men whose roadside bomb led to the death of a Finnish peacekeeper is going to result in a new trial in Afghanistan. Peacekeeper Sgt. Petri Immonen was killed by a blast from an improvised explosive device or IED in May.
Afghanistan's newly appointed Ambassador to the Nordic Countries Jawed Ludin, who is stationed in Oslo, considers it self-evident that the investigation into the matter will continue. Ludin, who delivered his letters of accreditation on Thursday, discussed the issue with the Finnish President Tarja Halonen.
The attack that killed Immonen also caused three Norwegian peacekeepers to sustain injuries. Finland and Norway have insisted on a speedy examination of the reasons why the Afghan President Hamid Karzai felt compelled to pardon five of the seven men convicted of planting the IED.
According to Ludin, Karzai wanted to put right the deficiencies of the previous trial.
