Roger Talermo, the President and CEO of sports equipment manufacturer Amer, has been elected the new President of the Finnish Olympic Committee.
Talermo, 48, received 38 votes in the first round of voting, which made a second round unnecessary. Ilkka Kanerva, the Chairman of Finnish Athletics and the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, received 26 votes, and the third candidate, Jukka Rauhala, got four votes.
Talermo’s four-year term begins at the start of 2005. The Amer head was in Chicago yesterday at a meeting, but was in contact with the OC gathering via satellite. His business trip had been agreed upon months ago, but Talermo officially announced his candidacy only last Saturday.
Talermo assured his listeners that he will not be a distant leader in the future. "I had committed myself to this trip earlier. My purpose was not to hide, and I will not do so in the future either."
Kanerva was selected to continue as Vice-President of the Olympic Committee. The second Vice-President is former cross-country skiing star Marjo Matikainen-Kallström.
Talermo is the fourteenth President of the Finnish Olympic Committee, whose history spans 97 years. He succeeds Tapani Ilkka, who headed the OC for sixteen years.
