Argentina to bring pulp mill dispute before Hague court

 print this
Argentina says that it will bring the dispute over the planned construction of two pulp mills in neighbouring Uruguay before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Argentina objects to the construction of the mills on the Uruguay River which forms the border between the two countries. One of the mills is being built by the Finnish company Metsä-Botnia and the other by the Spanish Ence. Argentina says that the mills violate bilateral treaties on the border river.

Argentina also wants a thorough investigation of the environmental impact of the project.
The dispute has inflamed relations between the South American neighbours, with hundreds of thousands of Argentines taking part in demonstrations against the project. There have also been blockades of bridges crossing the river, causing serious disruptions in transport in the area.
The dispute also caused Finland's Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paula Lehtomäki to cancel a visit to Argentina during her tour of South American countries.
