Kim Dotcom, the arrested IT-millionaire and founder of the illegal file-sharing site Megaupload is half Finnish.
His mother is Finnish, and he has both German and Finnish passports.
According to information obtained by Helsingin Sanomat, Dotcom also has a stepsister and a stepbrother who live in Turku, Finland.
Apparently the 37-year-old Dotcom has never really lived in Finland.
Dotcom made world headlines on Thursday of last week when he was arrested and his website Megaupload was closed down.
Dotcom and six other individuals are accused of piracy offences and money laundering, among other things.
Megaupload is one of the largest file-sharing services on the Internet. It allegedly has around 150 million users.
The shutting-down of the service prompted a defiant reaction in the online world.
A group of hackers attacked for example the webpages of the United States Federal Government.
Dotcom was born and raised in Germany. He was christened as Kim Schmitz.
In the 1990s, Dotcom achieved notoriety in Germany as a teen hacker who was sentenced to two years in prison for selling identities that he had stolen from teleoperators’ databanks.
In the early 2000s, Dotcom was sentenced for insider trading, embezzlement, and credit card fraud.
Nevertheless, he has managed to amass considerable wealth through his IT businesses.
Based on the Megaupload bill of indictment, in 2010 alone Dotcom earned more than EUR 30 million thanks to the Megaupload site.
Dotcom has used his Finnish nationality for example for registering the Megaupload site in 2005, the New Zealand Investigate magazine reports.
In the process he stated an address in Turku as his permanent residence. In the application he called himself Kim Vestor.
In 2010 Dotcom moved to New Zealand, settling in the most expensive luxury villa in the country. According to the New Zealand Herald daily, Dotcom bought the villa “as a Finn” and had even had the Finnish flag hanging from the villa’s balcony for a little while. It was seen flying proudly from the roof of the house in media images following the arrests.
In Finland, Dotcom claimed some fame for partying with rich local celebrities in the mid-2000s.
In 2005 the 7 Päivää gossip magazine interviewed Dotcom, who at the time used the nickname “Kimble”. The man reported that he often visited Finland and was proud of his Finnish nationality. He was seen for example in the company of Formula One driver Kimi Räikkönen.
One person who took part in the parties told Helsingin Sanomat that Dotcom spoke English and never stayed in Finland for more than a week at a time.
Online there are numerous images available that speak of Dotcom’s lavish lifestyle.
