A number of incidents of violence were reported in Finland during the weekend. At least four people died, and several others were hurt as a result of shootings and stabbings.
A young man shot and killed a man and a woman in the southwestern community of Kankaanpää late Saturday night.
Also on Saturday night, a 30-year-old man was shot dead in the northern community of Kemijärvi. In Hämeenkyrö, in Western Finland, a man and a woman were seriously injured in a shooting incident on Saturday evening.
In other weekend violence, a man was received a gunshot wound in the upper part of his body in the southeastern town of Kuusankoski, and in the southern community of Tuusula, a man was stabbed to death. In Järvenpää a man who had also been stabbed during the weekend survived, but was last reported to be in critical condition.
A 25-year-old man was injured in another stabbing in the northern town of Kemi.
In the Kankaanpää incident, police were alerted by the 24-year-old man who admitted to the shooting.
The head of the police investigation said that alcohol and drugs were not involved, and that one of the victims was his good friend. Problems with human relationships were reportedly involved in the shooting, which seems to have taken place in a fit of range.
The shooter and the victims had been spending the evening in a local restaurant. The shooter’s girlfriend was also there.
The group later went to the home of one of them. The shooter was also along, and he had a licenced shotgun with him.
After a brief discussion, he shot the female victim inside the apartment, and soon after that, the young man outside the building. Both died instantly.
The shooter’s girlfriend was unscathed in the incident. The man wielding the shotgun, was arrested. He reportedly has no criminal record.
In Kemijärvi a local man born in 1974 was killed in a shooting. The suspect, born in 1982, was apprehended Sunday the morning.
Police say that the shooting took place in an apartment at 1:35 Sunday morning. Four other people were in the apartment at the time. The group had been drinking.
The suspected killer fled the apartment. After a search involving two police dogs, he was found early in the morning in an apartment near the scene of the killing.
Two young men were stabbed in separate incidents in the southern Uusimaa region. One of the victims, a 22-year-old man, was found dead on the street in the Kellokoski district of Tuusula early Sunday morning. Police believe that he had been stabbed in a nearby apartment. Two people were arrested.
On Saturday evening, in neighbouring Järvenpää, another 22-year-old man was seriously injured in a stabbing. He was hospitalised, and was reportedly in critical condition Sunday evening.
He was also found on a street near a home where the attack is believed to have taken place. Four people have been detained in the incident.
Police do not believe that the two incidents are related.
