BACKGROUND: Espoo schools producing electronic absentee record

 print this
In Espoo all Finnish language comprehensive schools and high schools use an electronic learning environment - the Opit service - to support teaching.

Users of the system include about 30,000 pupils and 2,500 teachers, says Asko Lippo, head of information and communications technology at the Finnish-Language education centre.
It is possible to combine content produced by teachers and others, and link it with Internet sources and web pages", Lippo explains.
"It also decreases the risk that pupils might access inappropriate web sites."
It is possible to tailor tasks, activities, and contents according to the pupils’ age, for instance.

As of next autumn pupil absences will be recorded electronically in 15 Espoo schools.. Parents will be able to keep track of their children’s attendance, and the reasons for absences will also be clarified on line.
More schools will join the system the following autumn.
