Baana, Helsinki’s light traffic route from the West Harbour to Töölönlahti, is to be opened in June
Snow and frost have slowed up construction work
The City of Helsinki has promised to open a new light traffic route connecting West Harbour and the bay known as Töölönlahti (the location of the new Music Centre and Finlandia Hall) at the beginning of the summer.
The route is called Baana, and its opening ceremony is scheduled for Helsinki Day, which will be celebrated on June 12th.
Baana is being built in a former railway cutting once used by goods traffic to and from the port area, and the route starts from Ruoholahdenkatu, running between Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu and Eteläinen Rautatiekatu, and continuing to the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and the Music Centre.
The construction of an underground parking facility at the Parliament Building has been slowing down the building of the new passageway.
Moreover, the bounteous piles of snow we have received this winter and some deep frosts have complicated surface work, including asphalt paving.
At present, the installation of steel stairs, railings, and fittings is under way.
The length of Baana is around 1.3 km and its average width is about 15 m. The route is at its widest at the Maria Hospital, where it is 34 m across.
The zones for pedestrians and cyclists will be separated from each other by colours: the cycling zone will be reddish brown, while the pedestrian zone will be black.
There is access to the passage from the street level via several stairways. There will be free access to the passage at both ends as well as in the middle of the area.
From the street level it will be possible to go down along four cycle ramps and by means of several stairways.
The ramps will be located on Lastenkodinkatu, Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu, Runeberginkatu, and in the Pikku Parlamentti (the Parliament Annex) park.
Two stairways to the passage will be located near Pikku Parlamentti, as well as others from Malminkatu, Runeberginkatu, and Jaakonkatu.
The construction of the light traffic route Baana will cost EUR 4 to 5 million.
