The Board of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA)took delivery on Tuesday of a report that indicated the atmosphere in the workplace was returning to normal after a period of inflamed emotions.
Things began to go awry at the institute in April of this year. At the same time as there was evidence of a poor atmosphere at work, claims were put forward of the possible use of alcohol at work by the FIIA's Director, Raimo Väyrynen.
A study carried out among personnel at the Institute indicated that just under half considered the situation was serious.
The Board issued Väyrynen a verbal warning and demanded clarifications on how the problems were to be resolved.
"The Board has received a very detailed written and oral report on what measures have been taken at the Institute", stated Antti Tanskanen, the FIIA Board chairman.
He preferred not to go into details on what these measures might be, but noted that the various parties were intereacting a great deal more now than before the ruckus started.
Staff had criticised Väyrynen among other things for being hard to reach and discuss things with.
The Board is satisfied with the report it has been given.
"At least my personal understanding is that gradually things are returning to normal", said Tanskanen.
Staff representatives had not devlivered their own views on the situation to the Board meeting.
"I understood from the Director's report that the personnel are taking part in all these cooperative actions", said Tanskanen.
Staff representatives have not discussed the matter since members returned from their summer vacations, but the occupational health representative, research Charly Salonius-Pasternak stated that the subject would be raised in due course.
