Breaking News: Police officer in Kauhajoki shooting case to be charged with negligence

 print this
The Detective Inspector who was responsible for questioning the gunman in the Kauhajoki shooting incident last September, and who chose not to withhold the gunman's weapon just 24 hours before he went on the rampage, is to face charges of negligence for not confiscating the firearm.
The officer did not take away Matti Saari's Walther P22 pistol at the time of the interview, which was prompted by a report to police of alarming videos made and uploaded to the Net by Saari.

The interview took place on September 22nd, and on the following day Saari went to his vocational college and opened fire, killing ten people before turning his gun on himself.

The decision to raise charges was taken by Deputy State Prosecutor Jorma Kalske, and the matter was made public on Tuesday morning.
The police officer has denied guilt in the preliminary investigation of the matter, in which some 25 witnesses were heard.
The investigation also examined what material  Saari had placed on the Internet - and when - before carrying out the massacre at the school.
Saari had obtained the gun and a temporary firearms licence in August.
