Building work starts on new roof for Olympic Stadium

Work has got under way on the roof to be added to the East Stand of the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, in readiness for the hosting of the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Track and Field.
Work has been going on at the stadium since June, after the last public event to be held there, a concert by Paul McCartney. Only now, however, can onlookers from outside begin to see changes in the structure of the more than 60-year-old building.
The basic roof structure should be complete by February of next year, and the builders will be hoping for a winter short on snow and high winds, both of which would hamper their work. The revamped stadium should be completely ready by the beginning of May. Finland’s football team will be among the first to return to the venue, when they play Holland in June.
