New proposal to moor ship in Turku

Attempts to save the car and passenger ferry Finnjet from being broken up for scrap are continuing, even though the City of Espoo did not want to discuss a proposal for turning the vessel into a hotel ship on the Espoo shoreline.
Now a group of Turku business figures is working to save the 30-year-old vessel, which is currently on its way to India to the brekaer's yard.
The latest proposal is to moor the ship in Turku along the Aurajoki River near the former Wärtsilä shipyard area.
According to Turun radio, the local Turku station of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE), no agreement has been reached with the City of Turku on the matter, but the businessmen are working on compiling financing worth EUR 8 million for the project, aimed at getting the Finnjet to Turku.
The money should be found before the week is out, if the Finnjet, which was built in 1977 and sailed in Finnlines and Silja Line livery before being taken out of service, is to be rescued from being broken up.
