Candles lit for Myanmar monks in Helsinki on Tuesday
"Peace for Burma now" read the text spelled out in candles on the steps of Parliament in Helsinki on Tuesday evening.
A crowd of a few hundred people gathered for a candle-lit demonstration to demand peace and the restoration of human rights in Myanmar, the former Burma.
"I came down especially from Jyväskylä to light a candle. I want the world to know what is really happening in Burma. i had to take time off from school for this", said Burmese student Aye Wai Yin Thaw .
Aye, who has lived in Finland for six years, believes that the real situation in Myanmar will soon be revealed in all its horror.
According to official reports, only a few dozens died in the recent protests, while those who have fled the country speak of thousands of murdered monks whose bodies have been buried in the jungle.
Similar demonstrations have been held in Bangkok, London, Tokyo, and other cities according to Koko Thett of the organizing committee, the Committee for Candle Light Vigil for Burma.
