Capacitor manufacturer Evox Rifa asks employees to work for free on Saturday
Evox Rifa promises to pay later when financial situation improves
 |
Capacitor manufacturer Evox Rifa is holding discussions with its personnel at the company's factory in Suomussalmi on a managementproposal under which employees would work on Saturdays without pay until mid-June.
The company says that it would pay for the extra work later, once the company's finances improve.
Those who refuse to work an extra day would face a 15-percent pay cut.
The company's CEO Tuula Ylhäinen says that discussions are being held on a production bonus system, in hopes that the employees will agree to make an "extra effort".
Ylhäinen says that labour unions have been involved in the discussions. So far, the Metalworkers' Union, which represents employees on the production side of the company, does not plan any action on the issue.
Ylhäinen says that Evox Rifa wants to create between 70 and 80 new permanent jobs in Suomussalmi. Currently the company has about 200 long-term and about 100 fixed-term employees in Suomussalmi.
Evox Rifa claims to be the largest manufacturer of capacitors in the Nordic Countries, and the fifth largest in Europe. The company's main clients are in the automotive, lamp, and consumer electronics industries.
The company's main offices are located in Espoo, and it has production facilities in Suomussalmi, as well as Sweden, the UK, Indonesia, and China. Last year it employed a total of 1,320 people worldwide, half of whom work in Asia.
The number of employees at the Suomussalmi plant has grown since the company moved production there last year from the Kalmar factory that was shut down in Sweden. Some of the production at the Kalmar plant was moved to Indonesia.
Evox Rifa sustained a loss of EUR 7.5 million last year. In 2004 the loss was just EUR 0.3 million. Last year's result was affected by once-off costs of EUR 5.4 million, resulting from the shutdown of the Kalmar plant. The company's turnover declined by more than ten percent last year to EUR 79,9 million.
