The sorting of problem waste is not going exactly according to plan in the Greater Helsinki area. Each year around 500,000 kilos of hazardous waste end up with general waste in the Ämmänsuo landfill site in Espoo. This translates to half a kilo of hazardous waste per each capital area resident, heading in the wrong direction.
Two thirds of the capital area residents sort out their problem waste regularly.
People living in detached houses are generally more conscientious in sorting their waste than those living in residential apartment blocks.
Of those living in single-family houses, 64 per cent say they separate their problem waste from ordinary household rubbish and put it in the appropriate bins. The corresponding figure for those living in blocks of flats is 32%.
These were among the findings of the annual poll commissioned by the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV) Waste Management.
More than a thousand capital area residents took part in the mail questionnaire poll conducted by TNS Gallup. The poll has been carried out each year since 2000.
