The Centre Party had no nationwide campaign in Sunday’s municipal elections - or at least that is the complaint that many of the leaders of the party’s regional organisations have in the wake of Sunday’s municipal elections, the fourth consecutive elections in which the party has lost ground.
Helsingin Sanomat reached 19 of the leaders of the party’s 21 regional organisations on Monday.

“Campaign coordination failed completely”, said one, while another said that the question should be put to party secretary Jarmo Korhonen. “Korhonen did not keep the promise that he would be the campaign manager of the whole party.”
“In two years he has not done anything that would be of benefit to the party”, a third complained.

The regional party leaders were more satisfied with Matti Vanhanen as a Prime Minister than as a party leader. A frequent complaint was that the Centre Party leadership is “pulling in different directions”.
Many district leaders were certain that a new leadership would be chosen in 2010, but few wanted to hurry the changes before that.

Many respondents wanted changes in the politics promoted by the Centre Party - especially in regional development policy.
“Now it looks like market forces are dealing with common issues, as politicians look on from the sidelines”, complained one.
There were also calls for action to make the party more attractive. “We speak facts, but while others tell stories, and the people enjoy themselves, they get the votes.”
