Christmas tarts and other goodies fall foul of airport security checks

People travelling from Finland by air over the Christmas season who plan to take some seasonal delicacies along to their destination had better prepare themselves for some extra work - many of these items are not acceptable in hand luggage.
Cases in point include the familiar Christmas tarts - containing a jam filling - and assorted casseroles.
Airline passengers are now all too well aware of restrictions on liquids and of the need to package any liquids, toothpaste tubes, and other cosmetic items in their hand luggage into a see-through resealable plastic bag, but few have twigged that the anti-terror restrictions also apply to foodstuffs that contain liquids or pastes.
As yet, however, the security staff at Helsinki-Vantaa International have not been amassing large stockpiles of Christmas tarts confiscated from passengers attempting to carry them in their hand luggage.
"People like to take home-made items and Finnish specialities to where they are going, so they try to bring things like the plum-conserve tarts or Christmas casseroles into the cabin with them. When they arrive at the airport in good time, these items can be placed in the cargo hold. However, in the case of the casseroles in particular it is strongly advisable to pack them well so that they don't leak out all over the place", warns Finavia inspector Arto Tuominen.
Items that must go into the hold with the suitcases include the familiar tarts, puree-type foodstuffs such as vegetable casseroles or curd cheese, jellies, mousses, and items in aspic, filled cakes, food pastes, and all frozen goods.
