Christmas trees in Helsinki area range in price from EUR 10 to EUR 100
"This is the real Rolls Royce of treetop Christmas trees. It will fit even in a larger home in Töölö", says Christmas tree vendor Leevi Rönkkö from Kellokoski praising a thick specimen 3.5 metres tall at his sale location in the Etu-Töölö neighbourhood of the centre of Helsinki.
The tree that he shows is the most expensive in his selection.
Helsingin Sanomat visited a number of Christmas tree sales locations in the Helsinki region.
In addition to Töölö, triple-digit prices for Christmas trees could also be found at Market Square - the traditional Christmas, where forestry students at the University of Helsinki sell trees to earn money for their organisation.
Average prices ranged between EUR 30 and EUR 70. The cheapest trees, EUR 9.95, were to be found at the Plantagen gardening store in Tammisto in Vantaa. Plantagen specialises in Danish imports.
To make sure that a Christmas tree remains fresh and holds most of its needles from Christmas through Epiphany a few guidelines should be followed.
If the outside temperature is below freezing when the tree is bought, the tree should be allowed to thaw out in a cool place with the bottom in a bucket of water.
Before setting the tree up in its room for display, about one centimetre should be sawn off the bottom of the trunk. The bark should not be carved, because doing so impedes the flow of water.
After sawing, the tree should be placed on its stand with water in it as soon as possible. Use warm water at first. Spraying the whole tree with water also helps.
The water in the stand should be constantly replaced, and it should never be allowed to dry out.
Growers and vendors who are members of the Finnish Christmas Tree Society guarantee that trees on sale have been felled for no more than a month.
