Commissioner Rehn: US not a party to discussions with Turkey on EU membership
The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Finland's Olli Rehn, insists that discussions on Turkey's possible membership in the European Union are a matter for the EU, and not the United States.
In an interview with the television news service of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) on Monday, Rehn said that activism on the part of the United States on behalf of Turkish EU membership could actually lead to anti-Turkish backlash in the EU.
"I assume that the Americans are wise enough to understand that this really is a matter for Europe, and not for the Americans", Rehn said.
"The United States should respect the pace at which the EU moves forward", he added.
Last year US President George W. Bush called on the EU to move forward quickly on Turkish membership.
