Commissioner Rehn in Serbia: Protecting war criminals endangers ties with EU
The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Finland’s Olli Rehn, says that Serbia’s reluctant cooperation with the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal is hurting the country’s moves to join the European Union.
Rehn is in Serbia this week, and met with President Boris Tadic in Belgrade already on Monday.
"Adhering to international commitments ... is the gate from a nationalistic past to a European future", Rehn said.
Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has refused to arrest suspected war criminals. Tadic, for his part, is in favour of extraditing war crimes suspects to The Hague.
