Stavros Dimas, the European Commissioner for the Environment, has received at least one death threat from Finland, says the Commissioner's spokeswoman Barbara Helfferich.
The threat was sparked by the Commission's plan to bring Finland before the EU Court of Justice over the hunting of wolves. Before taking court action, the Commission is waiting for an answer from Finland on the limited wolf hunting allowed by this country.
The issue has also sparked interest abroad. For instance, the British newspaper The Independent reported the matter in its Wednesday edition.
Dimas has received a petition signed by 21,000 Finns supporting the culling of wolves in Finland.
