Development of male contraceptive pill comes to halt
 |
Finnish pharmaceutical companies have discontinued their development of the male contraceptive pill, the Savon Sanomat daily reports. According to the paper, the companies decided the pill was not an attractive enough product for further investigation and research.
"The product would have become too expensive. Furthermore, it would have required regular semen check-ups from its users", explains chief surgeon Dan Apter from the Family Federation Sexual Health Clinic.
The male birth-control pill was expected to become available in around five years’ time. Now the product’s introduction looks to have been postponed far into the future.
According to Apter, the research and development of contraceptive products as a whole has slowed down. The chief surgeon suspects the reason may be the stalled market growth of such articles.
"New contraceptive methods have not recently been introduced. Of late, only some new contraceptive pill brands for women have turned up."
