The European Referendum Campaign (ERC) activists, who are demanding a popular referendum to be held on the constitution of the European Union, gathered in front of Parliament in Helsinki on Monday. They parked their German campaign bus entitled Mehr Demokratie (More Democracy).
Their landmark was a red 7-metre-high inflatable display made of plastic symbolizing the EU Constitution. A large blue arrow that carried a text "only by fair referenda" was attached to the display.
Representatives of the parliamentary groups from all political parties came to make speeches on the issue on the steps of the Parliament House. Also critical views on the necessity of a referendum were heard at the event.
In practice, the government has already decided that there will be no referendum on the EU Constitution in Finland.
The ERC campaign bus has already visited several countries, including Great Britain, Denmark, and Sweden. Today, on Tuesday, it will be headed for Estonia.
The tour started in Copenhagen on August 30th, and the last event will be in the Latvian capital Riga on September 17th.
