Electrical fault halts train traffic on Ostrobothnia line
Rail traffic between the cities of Tampere and Seinäjoki came to an abrupt halt on Sunday afternoon because of a fault with the electrified track. A replacement bus service was provided between the cities.
Some of the train traffic was rerouted via Haapamäki. During the course of the evening trains were running two to three hours behind schedule.
The train track in the vicinity of Ylöjärvi, north of Tampere, was damaged at around 15.30 on Sunday afternoon. For an as yet unknown reason, the electrical cables suspended above the track fell down on a passing freight train over a distance of 1.5 kilometres. Damage was also done to some of the gantries holding up the high-voltage cables.
Because of the repairs, passengers are warned of possible delays even on Monday. Trains are expected to coast through the damaged area until the power is restored. Estimates are that the repair work may take up to a week.
