Two elevators at Helsinki’s largest Metro station - the Central Railway Station are working again after they had been put out of commission by massive water damage in November.
Escalator service was restored three months after the flood, and the station was opened to passengers, but it has been effectively closed to certain passenger groups, such as the wheelchair bound, and those with small children in prams.
The elevators were out of use for more than six months. The equipment had to be completely replaced. Even the walls inside the elevator shafts needed repairs.
Although the station was re-opened in February, repair work is still going on.
The repairs are expected to cost about EUR 5 million, not including the full repair of the escalators, which is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
One of the four escalators at the station has been repaired. The escalators are being fixed one at a time, in order to minimise disruption to service.
