Eurovision promotional merchandise floods Helsinki
Badges and t-shirts depicting Ukrainian entry are hottest items
When a tired visitor to the Eurovision Song Contest leaves the partying in Helsinki next week, he or she will certainly want to take a nap behind a glittering eye mask on the flight out.
The Eurovision week may have been tiring, but the t-shirts with a picture of Queen Elizabeth II and the slogan God save the Eurovision Queens are testimony to the fact that it has all been worth it.
The hand luggage of a Eurovision tourist might be packed in a black cloth bag with Leave Me Alone, the title of the Finnish entry, on the side.
Inside the bag there might be a woollen cap fitted with a pair of horns and the slogan Hard Rock Finland. Hey, come on, it felt funny at the time.
Once at home the tourist might take a relaxing dip in a swimming pool - naturally in a turquoise Eurovision swimsuit, with a text proclaiming that the wearer is a real Schlager Slut.
Eurovision key rings, a board game, a wallet, playing cards, a mouse pad, pendant, and various shirts, pins, and badges will remain as reminders of the Helsinki Eurovision Song Contest for years (well, weeks, anyway) to come.
Of the badges, the most treasured are those depicting Verka the Ukrainian entry, who became a cult queen of Eurovision fans at a very early phase. Verka shirts and Verka badges are the hallmarks of the completist Eurovision fan.
