As a pensioner, former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen (SDP) earned quite a comfortable income last year.
Lipponen’s total earned income in 2008 was EUR 175,000. In addition, he got EUR 45,000 in capital gains. He paid a total of EUR 91,000 in taxes, putting his tax rate at 41 per cent.
Last year Lipponen became a consultant for the Russian-German owned gas pipeline company Nord Stream. At that time he said that he would be paid a consultant’s fee on an “international level”. Following the controversy that ensued, Lipponen gave up all of his positions of trust, with the exception of veterans’ activities.
Lipponen’s task is to serve as a liaison between Nord Stream and Finnish decision-makers, and to seek to expedite the environmental licencing process of the pipeline in Finland.
In addition, he serves as an advisor to the energy company Pohjolan Voima, which is the main owner of Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), which runs two of Finland’s four existing commercial nuclear reactors, and is in the charge of the construction of a fifth.
