FACTFILE: 12,000 Estonian construction workers in Finland

 print this

Around 12,000 Estonians came to Finland for work last year.

Construction workers in particular are tempted to cross the Gulf of Finland on short, well-paid contracts.

There are now shortages of skilled builders and other construction workers in Estonia itself. Help for the shortfall has been sought from Polish workers and others.

A building worker in Estonia earns slightly more than the average wage. This year the average monthly wage is expected to rise by around 15 per cent to roughly EUR 675.00.

Regional differences in wage-levels are large in Estonia. Salaries in the Tallinn area are highest.
