FACTFILE: Bats: the world's only flying mammals
Bats are the only flying mammals in the animal kingdom.
There are 11 species of bats in Finland, and all are protected by law.
All Finnish bats are insectivores.
Tagging bats is allowed only for research purposes. The identification bands help researchers learn about their life span, movements, and territorial mobility.
The researchers are interested in learning more about the bats’ daytime resting places, especially in Kirkkonummi, Inkoo, and Siuntio. The Finnish Museum of Natural History is also gathering information on places where bats hibernate. Observations can be submitted through the feedback page on the museum’s website.
