 |
In 2003, there were a total of rather more than 16 million overnight guests at registered Finnish hotels, inns, and other forms of accommodation. Of these, 4.3 million were foreigners.
In Lapland, the total figure for overnights in 2004 was nearly 2 million. Around 1.2 million of these were Finns, and 750,000 were from abroad. Lapland's market share of overnight stays in Finland was some 9.6% for the Finnish tourists, and rather more - 16.8% - when foreign visitors are considered.
The greatest flows of tourists to Finland are from Sweden, Germany, and Russia. These countries are followed by Great Britain, Holland, Norway, the United States, and France.
British tourists lead the way in terms of visitors to Lapland. Other countries high on the lists are Germany, France, Holland, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, Italy, Japan, and Spain.
The peak seasons for trips to Lapland are the downhill skiing season from February to April, the period from June to September (hiking holidays and trips to see the glorious fall colours), and the Christmas period.
