FACTFILE: Nordic banks control Estonia

Swedish and Finnish banks currently dominate in the Estonian banking business.
      The largest Estonian bank, Hansapank, has been fully owned by Swedes ever since the spring, when Swedbank bought the holdings of the other shareholders. Hansapank’s market share in Estonia is 50 percent.
      The Swedish banking group SEB owns the second largest Estonian bank, Eesti Ühispank. Its market share is 30 percent.
      The owner of Estonia’s Nordea is the Swedish-Finnish Nordea group. Its market share is ten percent.
      Sampo Pank, a part of the Finnish Sampo group, holds an eight-percent slice of the market. These four banks boast a combined market share of some 98 percent in the Estonian banking business.
