During the war, some 70,000 to 80,000 Finnish children were evacuated from Finland, mainly to Sweden and Denmark.
A total of 40,000 to 70,000 children lost their parents.
The number of those who were displaced within Finland as a result of the fighting is not known exactly.
Child prisoners came from the districts of Suojärvi and Salmi in Karelia. Most of the 2,000 prisoners held in the war zone by the Soviets were children.
The total number of the children fathered by German soldiers is not known.
Civilian veterans and children fell victim to Soviet partisans in the north. Raids across the border were frequent, and villages and isolated farmhouses were targeted, often leaving no survivors.
Around 80 children with their mothers were taken to internment camps. Their fathers were Hungarian or German.
