FACTFILE: Progressively more enthusiasts taking to the icy waters
Ice swimming or winter swimming is practiced on a regular basis by something like 120,000 Finns. The numbers are increasing all the time.
It is a hobby with a good many useful health benefits. It melts away stress, improves circulation and the ability to withstand cold, and reduces blood pressure. Some claim it can keep the ‘flu at bay, too.
A cold dip refreshes, it is said to slow the process of ageing of cells, and it keeps the skin trim and supple. Ice swimming can even remove wrinkles, some claim.
The next Finnish Ice Swimming Championships will be held in Vammala in February 2007. The event involves a 25-metre track, with competitors doing the breast stroke.
