FACTFILE: Retreat with caution
|
 |
Bears will avoid contact with humans almost always. They are dangerous only when they feel a need to defend themselves, their cubs, or food.
When walking in the forests it is best to make sound. Walk on twigs, or converse normally with a companion. Do not make any restless movements.
If you see a bear, observe its behaviour. Do not approach it. Move away in a different direction.
It is best to take so-called false attacks seriously, and to leave in such a situation. Angry bears will grunt, shake their heads, and stand on four feet.
Avoid sudden movements and walk away calmly, speaking quietly.
As a last resort, lie down on the ground, protecting your head and neck with your arms.
Bears should never be allowed to become acclimatised to the presence of people. They should not be fed, and food should not be left for them. If necessary they should be chased away from areas where people live.
