FACTFILE: Rudolf Koivu Prize given out for best illustrations
 |
The Rudolf Koivu Prize, worth EUR 6,000, for the best illustrations in a book for children or young people, was won on Thursday by Salla Savolainen, age 42, for her illustrations in the book Pikku Xing ("Little Xing").
The panel of judges praised Savolainen for her "skilful illustrated story about how a small person and her foster-parents gradually learn to know each other". They also expressed admiration for the way that she draws faces. Special mention was given to the "colours used in the illustrations, which glow and shine".
The Rudolf Koivu Prize, named after the painter and illustrator (1890-1946), is handed out every second year by Grafia, the organisation of graphic designers. It was first awarded in 1949. A panel of preschool-age children of the Vironniemi day care centre in Helsinki also chose its favourite illustrated works. The winner was a picture book by Aino Kavukainen and Sami Tuominen, Tatu ja Patu Helsingissä ("Tatu and Patu in Helsinki").
