FACTFILE: Seven heritage sites
The purpose of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites is to protect sites that are considered to be especially important to the world’s cultural and natural heritage.
Finnish World Heritage Sites are governed according to the country’s own legislation. The status does not require new laws or conservation areas to be set, nor does it affect residents or industry in the area.
When applying for the status, the government gives assurances that the site’s value will be preserved. If they are threatened, the site may be removed from the list.
In addition to the Kvarken Archipelago, Finland has six other UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are a total of 830 such sites worldwide.
The Kvarken complements the previous addition of the Swedish Höga Kusten shoreline area to the list.
