FACTFILE: Women and alcohol

 print this

Finnish consumption of alcohol has increased sharply from the beginning of this year. To the end of June 2004, consumption went up by 7.6 from the first six months of the previous year.

Drinking by women is also on the rise. In particular, alcohol use by young women of child-bearing age has become markedly more widespread.

Young women’s drinking habits are approaching those of the binge-drinking culture found among young Finnish men. Overall, women drink around one-third of what the men put away.

Traditionally, alcohol is more commonly consumed in Finnish homes than in restaurants and bars.

According to several studies, alcohol consumption and child welfare cases go hand in hand.
