According to the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK), a sufficient number of farmers have committed themselves to continue growing sugar beet in Finland, and therefore ensured the future of the one remaining sugar factory in the country.
An MTK questionnaire indicated that 99.2% of the required volume of sugar beet would be produced to satisfy the needs of the plant - located in Säkylä.
The factory's owner Sucros announced on Monday that the future of Säkylä was still open because the required number of growers had not stepped up and reported they would be staying in production.
In an open letter to Päivi Paakkarinen, the CEO of Sucros, the producers' organisation calls on the company to commit itself to production, as the farmers have met their side of the bargain.
Sugar production in Finland has been under threat following recent EU moves to cut sugar production within the Union, and the slashing of production quotas.
