Police are investigating the death of a woman hit by a car in connection with Thursday’s massive pile-up on the Porvoo motorway as a possible case of aggravated dangerous driving and manslaughter.
Charges are also under consideration in the two other fatalities that took place that morning.
The woman, who had been involved in a collision on the motorway after weather conditions had rapidly deteriorated, had called her work place to say that she would be late. Soon after that she got out of her car and was struck by a car, whose driver could face criminal charges.
Police are not yet saying if the woman was on the road, or its shoulder when she was hit. The police investigation is to take some weeks before the case is brought to the prosecutors.
In the other fatalities it is not as easy to pinpoint a suspect, as the deaths occurred inside pileups involving dozens of cars on the Lahti and Porvoo motorways.
"At this stage it is clear that there will be more than one prosecution. No individual person has caused this kind of pattern", says chief criminal inspector Timo Nyyssönen.
Helsinki’s Töölö Hospital treated 16 people who were injured in the crashes. On Monday three of the victims were still in hospital.
