Fewer crimes in Helsinki in January 2006

In January 2006, the number of crimes reported to the Helsinki Police Department decreased by over 10 percent compared with the same period last year.
      A total of over 6,000 violations of criminal law were recorded by the police in January, compared with nearly 7,000 in January 2005.
      The number of all criminal offences except for robberies dropped, while the number of robberies increased only by two incidents relative to the previous year.
     
According to the police statistics, the number of sexual offences dropped most. In January 2006, a total of 17 such offences were recorded by the police, while last year’s corresponding figure was 64.
      The number of assaults decreased by almost 10 percent, while the number of cases of vandalism dropped by some 16 percent, and the number of people guilty of drunken driving decreased by about three percent.
      In January, the largest numbers of assaults occurred in the districts of Kluuvi, Kamppi, Kallio, Kontula, and Itäkeskus.
      On the other hand, the number of home burglaries was clearly on the increase. In January 2006, the problem area was the district of Lauttasaari, with 11 break-ins into the attics and basements of houses.
